This book examines the cultural patterns related to the consumption of alcohol by young people, through reconstruction and analysis of sociological drinking rituals practised by them. The central hypothesis of the work is that the drinking ritual is one of the privileged forms of "togetherness" of young people, having important functions of social integration and differentiation on the basis of specific norms and values.
Using the theoretical and conceptual instrumentation of rites of passage (Arnold Van Gennep) and rites of institution (Pierre Bourdieu), the main rituals of “drinking together” practiced by the youths are described and analyzed. A model of interpretation is also proposed that analyzes drinking ritual, making clear both the main reference norms (management of the body, gender, status, etc.), and the strategic actions taken by the players according to such standards.
The data had been collected by a qualitative research (January 2005-January 2010) conducted in Trento and Catanzaro (Italy). The methodological tools used were those typical of ethnography: participant observation and in-depth interviews. The participant observation was carried out within the main places of interaction related to drinking group of young people (bars, restaurants, nightclubs, homes, etc.). There were also conducted in-depth interviews to young drinkers (16-30 years) and privileged witnesses (social workers, teachers, bartenders, etc.).
